The second edition of this guide with expanded sections is now available.

The second edition of A Guide to Temporal Bone Dissection authored by Marcus Atlas and Rob Eisenberg was published in 2004. This guide has been widely acclaimed and contains new chapters on cochlear surgery and the middle fossa approach to the internal auditory meatus.

The images below are taken from this book. The illustrations demonstrate the techniques used for modified radical mastoidectomy and taught in these courses. This guide is used by the course participants as well as hands-on supervised dissection, lectures, videos and exposure to the latest surgical technology.

Modified radical mastoidectomy is commonly used in the management of cholesteatoma. The principal indications for modified radical mastoidectomy are the presence of poor pneumatisation of the temporal bone and extensive cholesteatoma disease. Modified radical mastoidectomy techniques may be used with malignant tumours of the external auditory canal and benign tumours of the middle ear.

The important surgical concepts involved in modified radical mastoidectomy are related to complete removal of air cell tracts and the creation of a well constructed cavity. The advantage of this modified radical mastoidectomy technique is the extensive exposure of the tympanomastoid space in the presence of a poorly pneumatised mastoid.
